There are many
important criteria to be reviewed when considering the purchase of printing
equipment:
- Remember
that any equipment purchased will have to be maintained and serviced.
Just because two of one type printer can be purchased for less that one
of another type, it doesn’t mean that the two printers are less
expensive to own over time. Also, consider the cost per page for toner,
print cartridges, and or ribbons.
- And don’t
forget to put time into your equation. An inexpensive stand-alone four
page per minute printer may be just fine for most small documents, but consider
waiting for a one hundred and fifty-page document when you are facing a
mission-critical deadline. At best you will see a finished document 30
minutes or so later - provided someone is standing by to put more paper
and print cartridges in the printer as needed. With a twenty page per
minute heavy-duty laser printer you’ll be on your way in less than eight
minutes with no user intervention.
- Each
end-user must also have software drivers installed on their workstation
and will probably need some amount of instruction. When several users
utilize the same printer, the cost per user goes down and the print time
can be reduced greatly.
